Running on Barton Creek

Since I haven’t been able to wish away the extra ten pounds that appeared over the last year or so I decided that I needed to either give up beer or exercise more. I’ve never been a fan of running, but giving up beer seems even worse, so I found myself on the Barton Creek Greenbelt trail without my bike this morning.

This was my second attempt at a three mile loop from the house that heads down to the creek, downstream for about .8 miles and then back up to the house. The first time I managed to ‘run’ for about half the course. This time I did a little better, maybe three quarters of the way. Elapsed time was 47 minutes. I’m hoping that I’ll get to 100% running in the next two attempts or so and maybe break 30 minutes.

What’s new on the creek? It’s continuing to dry up, although still a little flow at Sculpture Falls and downstream from there for a while. Turk’s Cap is blooming and the beauty berries are setting, so maybe we’ll have a good display this year.

I’m also seeing more and more green doggie bags left by the trail. Can one of you dog owners explain that to me? My guess is that these are left by dog owners who pretend to pick up after their dogs when the think someone is looking, but then ditch the bag later. If you’re not going to haul it out it seems to me like it might be better to just pitch the poop into the woods rather than leave more plastic trash.

I like the picture of the turks cap better than the photo of dog poo in a plastic bag.
